Release Day Review: Born to be Wilde by Eloisa James + Giveaway

The richest bachelor in England plays matchmaker…for an heiress he wants for himself!

For beautiful, witty Lavinia Gray, there’s only one thing worse than having to ask the appalling Parth Sterling to marry her: being turned down by him.

Now the richest bachelor in England, Parth is not about to marry a woman as reckless and fashion-obsessed as Lavinia; he’s chosen a far more suitable bride.

But when he learns of Lavinia’s desperate circumstances, he offers to find her a husband. Even better, he’ll find her a prince.

As usual, there’s no problem Parth can’t fix. But the more time he spends with the beguiling Lavinia, the more he finds himself wondering…

Why does the woman who’s completely wrong feel so right in his arms?

Review:

3 and a hlaf stars

I was really looking forward to this one – I was so intrigued by Parth in book 1 & 2, but ended up more drawn to Lavinia. I knew that she wasn’t as frivolous and shallow as Parth saw her originally, but this really explored the way her love of fashion and fabrics was actually a passion, talent, and cultivated skill. After her mother’s laudanum addiction left her without a dowry or, well, anything, she managed to turn her passion into a commission. I loved how dedicated she was and how hard she worked alongside the seamstresses.

I also loved that the woman Parth planned to marry turned out to be someone Lavinia genuinely liked, instead of some woman vs. woman battle. Their interactions, along with Lavinia and Diana’s, were lovely, but I did miss Willa and Lavinia’s friendship.

Parth and Lavinia have always had an adversarial relationship up until this book. We knew they were obsessed with each other and called each other names like children, but this book revealed that Parth’s jabs cut Lavinia deeply because of her low self-esteem, which was actually really interesting to me. She would throw barbs and he would jab back, but the things he said about her were things she actually believed about herself, so they affected her a lot.

The pacing was a little off at times, slow to develop sometimes and rushed in others. My main complaint, though, is that Parth’s background seems almost insignificant. Parth is half-Indian, but grew up in England and was raised by the Wilde family from age 5. The author includes a note about how there were many, many half-Indian children growing up in England at the time, so I get that she didn’t want him to seem different. But, he was just like the other Wildes. There was no mention of boys at Eton treating him differently because of his heritage, no adjusting to English culture, no foods or customs he missed from home. I get that he was very young when he arrived in England and very much a part of the Wilde family, so maybe that’s realistic, but it seemed like a cop-out. Like a way to say the book has a diverse cast but really just having a “golden-skinned” Englishman.

Overall, I did really enjoy it but I think book 2 was stronger. Maybe that’s because North and Diana’s relationship and wedding was still such a big part of this book, too.

Blog Tour & Review – A Scandalous Deal by Joanna Shupe

EDIT: REVIEW:

Howww is Joanna Shupe so good?

Just like with A Daring Arrangement, when I started I wasn’t sure if I was going to fall in love with these two and then somehow I’m halfway through the book and can’t stop reading. The Joanna Shupe word vortex pulled me in and didn’t let me go.

I absolutely love this setting. I want more historical romance outside of Great Britain.

The story has a diverse cast, dealing with real issues, real fears, and finding real love. (For the record, I would absolutely LOVE to read Becca’s story). I felt Eva’s frustration and anger at the unfairness of the way society was catering to the absolute fragility of all the men around her. I felt her pull to Phillip, even when she was annoyed with him. I felt her pride seeing her dreams come true and, finally, being recognized for her own worth.

I was annoyed at Phillip, but I was still rooting for him to figure it out and I am deeply satisfied with the story’s conclusion. There were a few times at which the dialogue felt a little awkward and unnatural, which didn’t take me out of the story or anything, but might if you are listening in audio.

4.5 stars, you should read it.

ARC provided by Avon & Edelwiess for an honest review.

Final review coming – Okay, SO. I signed up to review this book because I LOVED A Daring Arrangement. But, I didn’t plan my life correctly and I haven’t finished reading it yet. HOWEVER I am almost done and confident that you should go get it because it’s excellent. I’ll finish tonight and post my actual review other than “OMG JOANNA SHUPE I LOVE HER” this week!

Joanna Shupe returns with another unforgettable novel set in the glittering world of  New York City’s Gilded Age…

They call her Lady Unlucky…

With three dead fiancés, Lady Eva Hyde has positively no luck when it comes to love. She sets sail for New York City, determined that nothing will deter her dream of becoming an architect, certainly not an unexpected passionate shipboard encounter with a mysterious stranger. But Eva’s misfortune strikes once more when she discovers the stranger who swept her off her feet is none other than her new employer.

Or is it Lady Irresistible?

Phillip Mansfield reluctantly agrees to let the fiery Lady Eva oversee his luxury hotel project while vowing to keep their relationship strictly professional. Yet Eva is more capable—and more alluring—than Phillip first thought, and he cannot keep from drawing up a plan of his own to seduce her.

When a series of onsite “accidents” make it clear someone wants Lady Unlucky to earn her nickname, Phillip discovers he’s willing to do anything to protect her—even if it requires a scandalous deal…

Excerpt

“Yes…. I will.”

His nostrils flared ever so slightly.

“Why?” he asked, brows lowered in confusion. “Why now?”

She understood perfectly. A few days ago, she’d insisted on professional distance. Yet how could she explain it? They were high above the city, just the two of them, in a cocoon of warm July air. “Does it matter?”

“It does to  me. I’d like to know why you’ve changed your mind.”

Because she wanted him, wanted him to do the same wicked things he’d done on the ship. The insides of her thighs grew slick just thinking on it. She went with a coy answer instead. “Isn’t that what women do?”

One side of his mouth kicked up. “Most women, perhaps. However, you’re not most women. There’s no one else who can begin to compare.”

WED Historical Sale Blitz & Interview – Characters

Historical Sale Blitz

Hopefully summer frees up a little bit of time for reading. And with Book #1 of these three series on sale for just 99¢, it’s time to start a new series (or 3).

To celebrate the sale, authors Robyn DeHart, Ally Broadfield, and Harmony Williams are spending the week with us! To start, we asked them a bit about the characters in their series.

What do you love about the hero & heroine in the first book in the series?

Ally Broadfield (author of the How To series): How stubborn they are. They’re a classic enemies to lovers couple, but both of them fought hard against the pull of attraction.

Harmony Williams (author of The Ladies of Passion series): I love the banter between them. Rose can be stubborn but Warren is not willing to back away from the obvious chemistry between them.

Robyn DeHart (Author of The Brotherhood of the Sword series): How stubborn they are. They’re a classic enemies to lovers couple, but both of them fought hard against the pull of attraction.

What characters have been your favorite to write? Why?

Ally: Thornbrook and Louisa from How to Bewilder a Lord. They were both secondary characters in How to Bewitch an Earl, and I had no intention of anything ever happening between them. Luckily they had other ideas.

Harmony: Mary’s go-getter, brazen, “I’ll fix this” attitude is a huge amount of fun to write. She is fearless, even if she is sometimes out of her depth.

Robyn: I love Evie from Undercover With the Earl. She was so fun. I kind of imagined her as Mary, the middle Bennett sister from P&P only with more personality. 😉

Start the How To series, by Ally Broadfield, with How to Beguile a Duke.

Start the Ladies of Passion series, by Harmony Williams, with How to Play the Game of Love.

Start the Brotherhood of the Sword series by Robyn DeHart, with Undercover with the Earl.

ABOUT ELIZABETH KEYSIAN

Elizabeth Keysian felt destined to write historical romance due to her Cornish descent, and an ancestral connection to the Norse god Odin. Being an only child gave her plenty of time to read, create imaginary worlds, produce her own comics, and write sketches and a deplorably bad musical for an amateur dramatics group.

Three decades spent working in museums and archaeology fired Elizabeth’s urge to write, as did living on a Knights Templar estate, with a garage full of skeletons, a resident ghost and a moat teeming with newts.
